Synopsis
THE MONK is a cinematographic adaptation of a 1796 gothic novel by Matthew G. Lewis, which depicts the tragic destiny of a Francisquian monk named Ambrosio, within the context of the 18th Century in catholic Spain Ambrosio (Vincent Cassel) is abandoned at the door of a monastery when he is just a newborn baby and, therefore, he is raised by the friars.
As a mature man he becomes an admired preacher known for his fervour, his perturbing personality and his shady intransigence. He believes himself protected of men’s sin and free of any temptation.
Anyhow, the sudden arrival of a misterious novice will stir all his convictions and sweep him to the way of perdition.
